Wonder Woman [#movie #review]

by Patty Jenkins

I will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
Diana

This movie impressed me greatly. Obviously it's a kind of film that doesn't give too much space to originality, the story is quite classic as an origin story of a superhero. Perhaps the story about "love will save the world" didn't impress me much, a bit too mushy, but I admit that I appreciate the idea of a heroine who loves to fight but who's also capable of compassion.
Diana, the Wonder Woman (although this name is never pronounced throughout the movie) is a great character. As a heroine is fantastic, at some point she goes alone against a whole army! I haven't seen Batman vs Superman yet but I don't know honestly what those two can do in comparison with her! XD I also liked her because if on one hand she has a bit of a superhero she doesn't do it for glory, or prove herself, but to save innocent people's life.

I expecially liked another character, too: Antiope, Diana's aunt, General of the Amazons. She ia marvelous in herself, but she is also played by Robin Wright, an actress who is very dear to me because she played Princess Buttercup in the awesome movie The Princess Bride, and seeing her in this role gave me the same excitement in the tweet that I quote here! :D

Two words about the setting: we're during the Great War in Europe, it's interesting and well done. The island of Themyscira is instead timeless, a place of wild and lovely nature, and I was amazed and proud to discover that those scenes were shot on the Amalfi coast! :)

As often happens to me when I get emotionally affected, I find it difficult to be objective about this movie, because I recognize that it has some flaws, but the thing is: I adored it and Wonder Woman is now my new idol! :)

Quotes

I used to want to save the world. This beautiful place. But I knew so little then. It is a land of beauty and wonder, worth cherishing in every way. But the closer you get, the more you see the great darkness simmering within. And mankind? Mankind is another story altogether.
Diana in the first line of the movie

It's about what you believe. And I believe in love. Only love will truly save the world.
Diana

Etta Candy: I'm introducing myself. It's Etta Candy. I'm Steve Trevor's secretary.
Diana: What is a secretary?
Etta Candy: Oh, well, I do everything. I go where he tells me to go, I do what he tells me to do.
Diana: Well, where I'm from that's called slavery.
Etta Candy: I really like her.

Steve Trevor: No, we are doing something! We are! We just... we can't save everyone in this war. This is not what we came here to do.
Diana: No. But it's what I'm going to do.

I can not stand by while innocent lives are lost!
Diana

Charlie: May we get what we want...
Steve Trevor: ...and may we get what we need.
Sameer: But may we never get what we deserve.

[eating ice cream for the first time] It's wonderful! [to the vendor] You should be very proud.
Diana

My father told me once, he said, "If you see something wrong happening in the world, you can either do nothing, or you can do something". And I already tried nothing.
Steve Trevor

[about 12 volumes of Clio's treatises on pleasure] They came to the conclusion that men are essential for procreation, but when it comes to pleasure... unnecessary.
Diana

Steve Trevor: It's, uh... it's just snowfall. Touch it.
Diana: [laughs] It's magical!
Steve Trevor: It is, isn't it?
