Voyager 1 [#astronomy]

On September 5, 1977 NASA launched the probe Voyager 1, meant to study the outer Solar System. It reached Jupiter in 1979, then Saturn the next year. At this point the mission was supposed to end, but it was extended, and Voyager 1 kept flying away and away. In 2012, after 35 years of activity, Voyager 1 entered the interstellar medium.

Cassini: The Grand Finale

The Cassini-Huygens mission ended on September 15th with the destruction of the probe entering Saturn's atmosphere. It was an amazing mission, lasted a lot more then initially expected, and will give for years material for new discoveries.

I know there was no way to keep it going, bit I'm sad this mission ended, especially because there are no other mission, at the moment, directed to the giant planets, and considering how long it takes to develop a mission, and for it to reach the planet, we won't have anything like Cassini for the next ten, fifteen years! :'(

Exoplanet Discoveries

Seven Earth-sized planets have been observed by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope around a tiny, nearby, ultra-cool dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. Isn't it awesome? ^___________________^

Ambition the film

Ambition the film: Ambition is a collaboration between Platige Image and ESA. Directed by Tomek Bagiński and starring Aidan Gillen and Aisling Franciosi, Ambition was shot on location in Iceland, and screened on 24 October 2014 during the British Film Institute’s celebration of Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, at the Southbank, London.

And also, it's proof that Little Finger will rule the Galaxy, too.

Comet Landing [#astronomy]

Celebrate the success of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Rosetta mission to Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

Today is the day! Today Rosetta mission finally ends, with a controlled impact of the probe on the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. I followed this mission with a lot of enthusiasm, passion, interest, fun... I loved Rosetta and Philae, I loved the videos (HERE the last one). On September the 6th we said our goodbye to Philae, and today the mission ends and we'll say our final goodbye to Rosetta too. I'm sad, but also excited for the very big amount of information that this mission gave and will continue to give us about comets, space, the universe and everything else.

What the discovery of gravitational waves means [#astronomy #video]

1.3 billion years ago, in a distant, distant galaxy, two black holes locked into a spiral, falling inexorably towards each other and collided, converting three Suns' worth of stuff into pure energy in a tenth of a second.
Two black holes, the densest thing in the Universe, one with a mass of 29 Suns and one with a mass of 36 Suns, whirling around each other 100 times per second before they collide. Just imagine the power of that. It's fantastic. And we know it because we heard it.

Obiettivo 2016 [#astronomy]

The Rosetta Mission [Astronomy]

A very cute claymation video made by Royal Observatory Greenwich made which explains what Rosetta and Philae have achieved as well as the impact the mission has had on our knowledge of our very own solar system.

Un carinissimo video realizzato dall'Osservatorio Reale di Greenwich che spiega che risultati Roestta e Philae hanno ottenuto e cheimpatto la missione ha avuto sulle nostre conoscenze del nostro sistema solare.

Informal Names on Pluto [Astronomy]

NASA through THIS WEBSITE is asking people to help them find names for Pluto and his moon Charon's features. Two days ago they released the first annotated maps of Pluto and Charon with some nome, for now still informal, but I really hope they'll stay.
