Homo naledi [Anthropology]

When recreational cavers found hominin fossils in previously well-explored caves in South Africa, a new form of scientific collaboration was formed. Scientists were recruited via social media, all products of the research were made open and publicly available and everyone is encouraged to draw their own conclusions.

Maybe you heard about the recent discovery of Homo naledi, a new, interesting specie that shares our genus. I think it's an amazing news, and I'm eager to know more about it. For now, I found this beautiful infografic that I want to share with you.

Thanks to John Hawks I found this very interesting article about science's changing perspective on Neanderthal, and how the habit of seeing them as stupid and inferior could actually has been a valid contribution to the work of recent anthropologists. Poor always misunderstood neanderthals, anyway! :)

Grazie a John Hawks ho trovato questo articolo molto interessante sul cambiamento di prospettiva della scienza riguardo ai neandertaliani, e di come l'abitudine di vederli come stupidi e inferiori potrebbe effettivamente essere stata un valido contributo al lavoro dei recenti antropologi. Poveri uomini di Neanderthal sempre fraintesi, comunque! :)

Le intermittenze della morte

Il sole non molesta le orbite vuote, ragion per cui i crani recuperati negli scavi archeologici non hanno necessità di abbassare le palpebre quando la luce batte improvvisamente sulle loro facce e il felice antropologo annuncia che il suo reperto osseo ha tutta l'aria di essere un neanderthal, anche se un esame successivo viene poi a dimostrare che in definitiva si tratta di un volgare homo sapiens.

Siamo figli dell'ecologia

Siamo in tutto e per tutto figli dell’ecologia: tra eruzioni catastrofiche, correnti oceaniche, glaciazioni, frammentazione di habitat, oscillazioni dei livelli dei mari e climi mutevoli, colonizzazioni di arcipelaghi, colli di bottiglia e diversificazioni culturali, le cose potevano andarci diversament su questo pianeta instabile e nonostante tutto accogliente.

Il risultato è che prima della Storia con la maiuscola ci sono state molte preistorie con la minuscola, la cui trama era composta da una molteplicità di forme umane conviventi*, ciascuna con propri adattamenti e riadattamenti specifici, con un universo cognitivo, emotivo e comunicativo probabilmente diverso, con abitudini e abilità figlie di percorsi storici cugini in territori ed ecosistemi differenti.

In futuro dovremo capire come sia stato possibile che nell’ultimo frangente di questa storia siamo rimasti soli e abbiamo imposto a tutti , ad altri umani e non umani, il nostro “progresso prepotente“, come lo ha definito il genetista Cavalli-Sforza.

(Not so) recent studies on the human genome it seems that among all the studied populations those with more genetic affinity with our dear cousins Neandertals are the Tuscans!

Naming archaic human populations

So now we face a Denisova Denisovan genome and a Denisova Neandertal genome. The Denisova Denisovan genome is part Denisova Neandertal. There are two additional Denisova Denisovan mtDNA genomes. For all we know, the nuclear genomes of those apparent Denisovans may be different mixtures of the Denisova Denisovan and Denisova Neandertal populations.

With the recent discoveries about ancient human population, there's starting to be a little of confusion about the name of all those different populations. John Hawks in this interesting article explains the problem aboot Denisovian and Neanderthal.
